Bhagalpur: Commuters travelling on State Highway-58 (SH-58) in Bihar will soon have to pay a user fee, with a new high-tech toll plaza planned at Nawgachia Zeromile in Bhagalpur district.
The proposed toll plaza will facilitate electronic toll collection from vehicles travelling on the Nawgachia-Bhatgama-Udaikishanganj stretch of SH-58. The project, including construction and installation of the electronic toll collection system, is estimated to cost Rs 12.79 crore.
The Bihar State Road Development Corporation Limited (BSRDCL) has floated a tender for the construction of the toll plaza, civil works and installation of the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system.
FASTag and digital payment system planned
The upcoming toll plaza will be equipped with electronic systems for collecting user fees. Vehicles will be able to pay the applicable toll through FASTag and other digital modes, reducing the need for cash-based collection.
The selected agency will be responsible not only for constructing the toll plaza but also for installing and commissioning the electronic toll collection infrastructure.
According to the tender conditions, the construction and commissioning of the complete system will have to be completed within three months.
Construction tender to open on September 28
The technical and financial bids for construction of the toll plaza are scheduled to be opened on September 28, 2026.
Following the selection of the agency, the construction work and installation of the electronic toll collection system will proceed within the stipulated three-month timeframe.
Separate agency to collect toll
The agency responsible for constructing the toll plaza will not necessarily handle toll collection. BSRDCL has initiated a separate tender process for appointing an agency to collect user fees from vehicles.
The tender for toll collection is scheduled to be opened on October 6, 2026.
The selected agency will collect user fees from vehicles according to the applicable rules and prescribed rates. The amount collected will subsequently be deposited with the corporation through the designated process.
Rs 11.31 crore annual collection target
BSRDCL has set an estimated annual user-fee collection target of Rs 11.31 crore from the proposed Nawgachia Zeromile toll plaza.
Once the plaza becomes operational, light, medium and heavy commercial vehicles travelling on SH-58 will be charged user fees according to the applicable vehicle category and rates.
The toll plaza is expected to bring a digital toll collection system to the route, with FASTag and other electronic payment options forming the main modes of payment.
For people who regularly travel along the Nawgachia-Bhatgama-Udaikishanganj SH-58 corridor, the introduction of the toll plaza will mean an additional user-fee payment once the facility becomes operational.
