Patna: As much of Bihar continues to reel under intense heat, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that monsoon rains are likely to enter the state between June 13 and 15. However, some meteorologists suggest the rain-bearing winds could be delayed further, possibly arriving as late as June 20.
The state’s Heat Wave Bulletin, issued by the IMD’s Patna centre on Wednesday evening, records extreme temperatures in several districts, with Buxar topping the chart at 42.8°C, followed closely by Gopalganj (41.7°C), Dehri (41.5°C), Bhojpur (40.8°C), and Patna (40.7°C). Other districts such as Gaya, Aurangabad, Motihari, and Darbhanga also crossed the 40°C mark, compounded by humidity levels ranging from 15% to 40%.
The bulletin notes no heatwave warning for June 12 and 13, although the situation remains uncomfortable, especially for vulnerable groups including the elderly, children, and people with pre-existing health conditions. The IMD has advised residents to wear light cotton clothing, avoid exposure during peak afternoon hours, and stay hydrated.
Despite the high temperatures, the IMD forecasts no significant change in maximum temperature over the next 48 hours. A gradual drop in temperatures is expected thereafter, likely influenced by the anticipated monsoon onset.
Meanwhile, uncertainty around the arrival of the monsoon has added to the public discomfort. While the official forecast pins the likely date of entry between June 13 and 15, some independent meteorologists caution that monsoon winds may be delayed until around June 20, citing weaker wind patterns and delayed advancement from eastern Uttar Pradesh.
The delay could have implications not just for daily life but also for agriculture, as June marks the beginning of kharif sowing in Bihar.
