Patna: Bihar could emerge as South Asia’s largest aviation hub within the next decade, according to Rajiv Pratap Rudy, the former Union minister and current Member of Parliament. Speaking about the proposed airport at Sonepur, Rajiv Rudy said the project would redefine the state’s economic trajectory and place it at the centre of regional air connectivity.
The proposed airport, to be built near Patna, is being described by its backers as India’s largest. Plans indicate a footprint of roughly 5.5 km in length and 2.5 km in width, a scale that would allow even the world’s largest aircraft to operate from the facility. According to officials, the central government granted approval shortly after cabinet clearance, paving the way for preparatory work to begin.
Land acquisition remains a critical element of the project. Authorities have indicated that landowners could be offered compensation at five times the prevailing market rate, a move aimed at easing concerns and accelerating the process. The proposal has reportedly generated interest and cautious optimism among farmers and local residents, many of whom see the airport as a gateway to new economic opportunities.
Infrastructure upgrades are also being prioritised to support the development. The six-lane expansion of Jayaprakash Setu is expected to improve connectivity between Patna and Sonepur, significantly reducing travel time. If completed on schedule, the airport and associated projects could strengthen Bihar’s position in aviation, tourism and trade, while creating thousands of jobs across sectors.
