Patna: At least seven people have died and several others were injured as severe storms, heavy rain and lightning swept across Bihar between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, officials said.
The state’s disaster management department confirmed five deaths, though local reports suggested the toll could be higher, with additional fatalities reported in parts of West Champaran.
Deaths Across Districts
Officials said one death each was reported from Saran, Madhubani and Darbhanga, while two people died in Danapur, near Patna.
In West Champaran, two separate incidents were reported, including one in which a man died after being crushed by a falling tree, and another involving an overturned e-rickshaw during strong winds.
Damage In Patna And Transport Disruptions
In the state capital, strong winds toppled trees and electric poles, disrupting traffic and power supply.
In Danapur, two people died after a wall of an under-construction building collapsed during the storm.
Rail services were also affected after a tree fell on overhead electric lines between Bihta and Kulharia, halting train movement for several hours.
Flooding And Power Outages
Heavy rain led to waterlogging in several towns, including Chapra and Darbhanga, where roads were submerged and drainage systems overflowed.
Fallen trees blocked key roads and highways, bringing traffic to a standstill in multiple districts.
Power outages were reported widely as strong winds damaged infrastructure.
Crop Damage And Local Impact
Officials said mango and litchi crops suffered significant damage due to strong winds and hailstorms in parts of north Bihar.
Residents reported panic amid frequent lightning strikes, with many forced to take shelter as storms intensified rapidly.
Weather Warning Continues
The India Meteorological Department has warned that storm activity, including lightning and gusty winds, is likely to continue across parts of the state until May 3.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, avoid open areas during storms and follow safety advisories.
