Patna: Police in Bihar have seized 620kg of cannabis from a cornfield in Supaul district, in what officials described as the largest operation against drug traffickers in the region to date.
The haul was recovered during a raid in the Virpur police station area, in Shubhankarpur village, after officers received specific intelligence about the storage of narcotics in agricultural land. The drugs were found packed in 20 sacks and hidden inside a maize field, police said.
Addressing reporters on Wednesday, Supaul superintendent of police Sharath RS said the operation was part of a district-wide drive against the illegal trade in narcotics. “This quantity clearly indicates that the consignment was meant for inter-district and interstate smuggling. We have registered a case and begun a detailed investigation into the entire network,” he said.
A case has been filed under Virpur police station case number 16/2026, and the seized cannabis has been taken into custody following legal procedures. Officials said efforts are now focused on identifying both the “backward and forward linkages” of the operation – including its suppliers, transport routes and intended destinations.
Police believe such a large consignment could not have been handled at a local level alone and point to the involvement of organized trafficking groups. “Our aim is not just to seize drugs, but to dismantle the entire chain behind this illegal trade,” the superintendent of police said, adding that further arrests were likely in the coming days.
The raid was conducted by a team led by the subdivision police officer of Virpur and included the station house officer, sub-inspectors and armed police personnel, along with members of the district intelligence unit.
Officials said the anti-narcotics campaign would continue with “full strictness” and warned that anyone involved in the cultivation, storage, transportation or sale of drugs would face firm legal action. The broader objective, they said, was to make the district drug-free and curb the growing impact of narcotics on young people.
