Patna: Bihar’s teacher recruitment process is set to follow a new examination pattern, with candidates appearing for BPSC TRE-4 required to clear both a Preliminary Test (PT) and a Mains examination.
The change comes ahead of the recruitment of 32,388 teachers under TRE-4. Unlike previous recruitment drives, the new system will use the PT as a screening stage before candidates move to the Mains examination.
Why Are Both PT and Mains Required?
The Preliminary Test is expected to function primarily as a screening examination. Candidates who qualify will be eligible to appear for the Mains, reducing the number of candidates competing in the final stage.
The Mains examination is expected to provide a more detailed assessment of candidates’ subject knowledge, conceptual understanding and depth of preparation.
The recruitment process, however, will not include an interview. Candidates will therefore be assessed through the written examination stages rather than the three-stage PT-Mains-interview structure used in civil services recruitment.
Will Two Examinations Improve Teacher Selection?
Education and examination experts suggest that a two-stage process could help strengthen the selection system, but its effectiveness will depend on how the examinations are designed.
The difficulty level of questions, syllabus, evaluation methodology and merit criteria will be important factors in determining whether the new pattern can identify candidates with stronger subject knowledge.
The change means teacher aspirants will have to prepare not only to qualify the initial screening test but also to demonstrate deeper understanding in the Mains examination.
How Was Teacher Recruitment Conducted Earlier?
The previous TRE-1, TRE-2 and TRE-3 recruitment examinations followed a single-examination format.
Candidates were assessed through one written examination, following which the merit list was prepared on the basis of their performance. There was no separate Preliminary and Mains examination.
TRE-4 therefore represents a significant change in the examination structure for Bihar teacher recruitment.

BPSC TRE-4 will be conducted for 32,388 teacher vacancies, according to the information available so far.
However, the detailed examination calendar and schedule have not yet been released. Teacher aspirants have been seeking clarity on the notification and examination dates as they prepare for the recruitment process.
