Patna: Jan Suraaj Party chief Prashant Kishor, who won the Bankipur assembly bypoll, will take oath as a member of the Bihar legislative assembly on Monday.
The oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for 10.30am and will be conducted by assembly Speaker Prem Kumar in his office in the main assembly building.
As the assembly is not currently in session, Kishor will not take the oath inside the House.
Oath to be administered in Speaker’s chamber
Newly elected MLAs are generally administered the oath during an assembly session. The monsoon session has concluded and the next session is yet to be scheduled.
In such circumstances, the Speaker can administer the oath to a newly elected member in his chamber.
Under Article 188 of the Constitution, a newly elected MLA is required to take the prescribed oath or affirmation before taking his seat in the House.
Jan Suraaj’s first MLA
The oath will formally mark Kishor’s entry into the Bihar assembly as Jan Suraaj’s first legislator.
The political strategist-turned-politician founded the Jan Suraaj campaign about two years ago. The party contested the previous Bihar assembly election independently but failed to win a seat.
Kishor’s victory in the Bankipur bypoll has now given the party its first representation in the state legislature.
Victory in BJP stronghold
Bankipur has traditionally been considered a stronghold of the BJP. Nitin Nabin represented the constituency for five consecutive terms before moving to the Rajya Sabha.
His father had also represented the constituency as a BJP MLA on four occasions, giving the party a long-standing presence in Bankipur.
The bypoll was held after Nabin’s election to the Rajya Sabha. Kishor defeated BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha by 19,324 votes to win the seat.
