Patna: Hundreds of motorists in Patna have had their driving licences suspended or revoked as authorities intensify enforcement measures to curb traffic violations and road accidents in Bihar.
According to data from the district transport department, 1,359 driving licences were suspended and 46 were permanently revoked in Patna district between April 1 and December 2025. Officials said drivers whose licences have been revoked will not be eligible to apply for a new one for three years.
The action forms part of a wider drive by the district administration and transport authorities to improve road safety and enforce traffic discipline. Officials said most of the punitive measures were taken against motorists engaged in reckless driving, with a significant number involving motorcycle riders.
Licences were suspended for serious offences including overspeeding, repeatedly jumping traffic signals, driving on the wrong side of the road, and riding without helmets or driving without seat belts. Authorities said stricter penalties were imposed on drivers who continued to violate rules despite receiving warnings and fines.
The administration said the crackdown was necessary in view of rising road accidents and worsening traffic conditions in the city. Officials also expressed concern over dangerous stunts and high-speed riding by young motorists, which they said posed a risk to pedestrians and other road users.
The district transport office said the enforcement campaign would continue, with increased use of e-challans and stricter action such as licence suspension and revocation against repeat offenders.
Upendra Pal, the district transport officer, urged motorists to comply with traffic rules, wear helmets and seat belts, and maintain safe speeds, stressing that even a single serious violation could result in losing the right to drive for several years.
