Patna: The Vigilance Investigation Bureau has registered 28 cases against public servants in corruption-related matters during January and February 2026, marking a sharp rise compared to previous years, Director General Jitendra Singh Gangwar said at a press conference.
According to Gangwar, the 28 cases filed in the first two months of 2026 are significantly higher than the figures recorded during the same period in recent years. In January-February 2024, only one case was registered, while seven cases were recorded during the corresponding period in 2025. In 2023, 10 corruption cases were lodged in the first two months.
Between 2023 and 2025, a total of 18 cases were registered in the January-February period combined. In contrast, 2026 alone has seen 28 cases during the same timeframe. The DG said that Rs 7.99 lakh has been seized in these cases. The accused public servants were caught red-handed while accepting bribes or were booked in disproportionate assets (DA) cases.
Average 72 Cases Annually Over 25 Years
Highlighting long-term trends, Gangwar said that over the past 25 years, an average of 72 corruption cases were registered annually, which translates to about six cases per month. However, action was intensified in 2025, when 122 cases were registered, raising the monthly average to around 10 cases.
In 2025, courts delivered convictions in 30 corruption cases. So far in 2026, four cases have resulted in convictions during January and February. The DG said that around 200 pending cases will be taken up for speedy trial, and efforts are underway to secure convictions in as many cases as possible by the end of this year.

On the occasion, Gangwar also inaugurated the renovation and expansion of the canteen building at the Vigilance Investigation Bureau campus. Senior officials present at the event included DIG Naveen Chandra Jha, Mrityunjay Kumar Chaudhary, Rakesh Kumar Sinha, Ajay Kumar Pandey, SP Bambam Chaudhary and Saifur Rahman.
