Patna: A fresh spell of heavy rainfall is expected to hit several parts of Bihar, including the capital Patna, over the next two days, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert for 21 districts.
While recent rains have brought relief to farmers in the region, urban areas have been reeling under waterlogging and flood-like conditions. Patna, in particular, witnessed severe disruption last week, with water entering homes, government buildings, and even the Bihar Legislative Assembly. Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sinha’s residence was among those affected.
Since Saturday night, light to moderate showers have been recorded in Patna and neighbouring districts. The IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and wind speeds between 30–40 km/h in parts of south-western, north-central, and north-western Bihar.
The forecast department has also warned of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated pockets of Supaul, Madhubani, and Darbhanga in North Bihar, along with similar conditions in Kishanganj, Araria, Purnia, Katihar, Bhagalpur, and Samastipur. Officials have raised concerns over potential flood-like situations as rising water levels in river catchment areas could lead to a sudden surge in flow.
On Saturday, light to moderate rainfall was reported from 20 districts, including Patna, with Madhubani recording the highest at 53 mm. Rainfall in the capital brought the maximum temperature down by 3.1°C, accompanied by 31 mm of precipitation. However, minimum temperatures saw a slight increase across most cities.
