Patna: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced strict measures to monitor the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by political parties and candidates during the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. Any misuse of AI-generated content could lead to legal action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Representation of the People Act, 1950, officials confirmed.
Sources within the commission said that violators could face imprisonment, fines, or both. The move comes amid growing global concern over the ethical implications of AI use in political campaigning and misinformation.
To enforce this directive, the commission has begun the process of setting up Media Certification and Monitoring Committees (MCMC) at both state and district levels. These committees will be responsible for scrutinising promotional material across print, electronic and social media. Functioning as independent cells, they will report regularly to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Bihar and the Election Commission.
“If there’s even a hint that AI has been misused in promotional content, approval will be denied,” a source from the commission said, adding that political parties and candidates will be briefed about responsible AI usage in campaigning.
