Patna: Amid severe heatwave conditions across Bihar, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued thunderstorm, rain and lightning alerts for 33 districts in the state on Wednesday. Orange alert has been issued for 14 districts, while 18 districts are under yellow alert. Weather conditions are expected to remain normal in the remaining districts.
The change in weather is likely to bring temporary relief from the scorching heat, with temperatures expected to dip by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. However, humidity levels are expected to remain high, leading to uncomfortable conditions.
Several parts of Bihar have been witnessing temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius over the past few days. According to weather data recorded in the last 24 hours, Kaimur (Bhabua) remained the hottest district at 42.7°C, followed by Dehri at 41.2°C and Chhapra at 40.6°C.
Why Sudden Rain After Extreme Heat?
According to the Meteorological Department, the sudden change in weather is mainly due to moisture-laden winds coming from the Bay of Bengal combined with the impact of a western disturbance.
Officials said the intense heat has increased atmospheric instability, leading to rapid cloud formation. As a result, hot daytime conditions are being followed by strong winds, thunderstorms and rain during the evening hours.
Safety Advisory Issued
The Meteorological Department has advised people to remain cautious during thunderstorms and lightning activity. Residents have been asked to avoid standing in open fields, under trees and near electric poles during bad weather conditions.
Farmers have also been advised to exercise caution while working in fields. Authorities have urged people to remain indoors during heavy rain and strong winds.
Rain Likely in Patna
The weather in Patna is expected to remain cloudy throughout the day. Light rain or drizzle may occur in some parts of the capital, accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph. The weather change is expected to bring relief from the prevailing heat.
Weather Outlook for Next Few Days
The IMD has predicted similar weather conditions across Bihar for the next three to four days. Several districts may continue to witness intermittent rain, gusty winds and thunderstorm activity.
The maximum temperature is likely to drop by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius during this period. However, weather officials have indicated that temperatures may rise again once the skies clear.
District Updates
In Supaul, weather conditions have already changed, and rainfall is expected till May 24. The Meteorological Department has issued orange alerts for May 20-21 and May 24, while yellow alerts remain in place for May 22-23. Thunderstorms and strong winds are likely during this period.
Meanwhile, Muzaffarpur witnessed light sunshine on Wednesday morning, but rain has been forecast for the next three days. On Tuesday, the district recorded a maximum temperature of 34°C, which was 2.1 degrees above normal, while the minimum temperature stood at 24.6°C, slightly below normal levels.
