Patna: A final spell of winter chill is expected to sweep across Bihar as snowfall and rain affect large parts of north and west India, meteorologists said, even as clear skies allow daytime temperatures to rise.
Snowfall is forecast for two to three days in the western Himalayan states, including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, between January 21 and 24, with rain likely across adjoining plains such as Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. While the precipitation may reduce fog in parts of north India, it is also expected to intensify the cold due to falling night temperatures.
Bihar is not expected to receive rain, but the impact of the changing weather system will be felt across the state. From Wednesday, an increase in the speed of westerly winds is likely to push night temperatures down by up to two degrees Celsius, making mornings and evenings noticeably colder. This follows a brief period of relief in several districts over the past few days.

Meteorologists said three consecutive western disturbances are currently active over the western Himalayan region, driving snowfall at higher altitudes and rain in the plains. The resulting cold air flow is expected to reach eastern India, including Bihar.
On Tuesday, temperatures rose slightly across much of the state. Maximum temperatures ranged between 23.3 and 27.2 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures varied from 8.5 to 14.6 degrees. Kishanganj recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 8.5 degrees Celsius, while Rajgir was the warmest at 27.2 degrees. Visibility dropped sharply in some areas, falling to 300 metres in Motihari.
In Patna, skies are expected to remain clear on Tuesday and Wednesday, with bright sunshine during the day. However, stronger westerly winds are likely to make early mornings and evenings feel colder. On Tuesday, the capital recorded a maximum temperature of 24.6 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 13.6 degrees, both slightly higher than the previous day.
Weather officials said current patterns suggest winter is gradually retreating from Bihar, but not before delivering one last bout of cold. While sunshine will offer some daytime relief, chilly nights and mornings are expected to persist for a few more days.
