Patna: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for 18 districts of Bihar, warning of heavy rainfall, strong winds and lightning on Friday.
The advisory covers both north Bihar and south-eastern parts of the state, with Khagaria, Kishanganj, Jamui, Saharsa, Nawada, Nalanda, Bhagalpur, Katihar, Purnia, Patna, Jehanabad, Gaya, Araria, Supaul, Madhepura, Sheikhpura, Banka, Munger and Begusarai expected to be affected.
In Patna, forecasters said the skies would remain partly cloudy throughout the day, with the possibility of isolated thunderstorms and showers.
Over the past 24 hours, light to moderate rain was recorded in five districts, with Saharsa receiving the highest rainfall at 2.1mm. Maximum temperatures across the state have risen by 5C, with Valmiki Nagar in West Champaran hitting 34C and Gaya and Vaishali recording the lowest at 25C.
Weeks of persistent rain have swollen several rivers, triggering flooding in many parts of the state and forcing residents from their homes. On Thursday, the chief minister, Nitish Kumar, conducted an aerial survey of flood-hit areas and instructed officials to remain on high alert for relief and rescue operations.
