Patna: A political row has erupted in Bihar after controversial remarks by Independent MP Pappu Yadav triggered strong reactions from women legislators across party lines. Both ruling and opposition women MLAs have condemned the statement, calling it “shameful”, “baseless” and “anti-women”.
The controversy stems from a recent comment by Yadav in which he alleged that “90 percent of women cannot succeed in politics without visiting leaders’ rooms,” drawing widespread criticism. The remark came in the context of discussions around the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
Women legislators unite in criticism
In a rare show of unity, women MLAs from different parties strongly objected to the statement, with several demanding public accountability and action.
Senior BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Renu Devi termed the remarks “deeply offensive” and said they reflect “mental bankruptcy”. She added that such statements insult not just women in politics but society at large.
First-time MLA Snehlata Kushwaha called the statement “absurd” and questioned whether Yadav had any evidence to support his claims. She said women across Bihar should strongly oppose such remarks.
Former minister Rama Nishad also criticised the MP, stating that his comments were inappropriate and reflected a flawed mindset.
BJP MLA Nisha Singh described the statement as “shameful” and said it does not befit a public representative. Several MLAs demanded a public apology and wider condemnation.
Calls for protest from ‘street to Assembly’
Some legislators warned of protests against the MP. JD(U) MLA Sonam Sardar termed the remarks “condemnable”, while others said the issue would be raised in the Assembly.
Samastipur MLA Ashwamedh Devi accused Yadav of holding “anti-women views” and questioned the double standards in his remarks.
Opposition MLAs also joined the criticism. RJD MLA Savitri Devi rejected the claim, stating that it was wrong to generalise women in such a manner.
Mixed responses from some MLAs
While most legislators condemned the statement, a few chose to refrain from immediate comment. Young MLA Maithili Thakur said she did not wish to comment on the issue. Jamui MLA Shreyasi Singh and Imamganj MLA Deepa Kumari said they would respond after reviewing the statement.
Political fallout likely
The controversy is expected to escalate further, with several leaders indicating that protests could be organised both on the streets and within the Assembly. The remarks have triggered a broader debate on the representation and dignity of women in politics, especially at a time when women’s reservation remains a key national issue.
As of now, there has been no official response or clarification from Pappu Yadav regarding the backlash.
