Patna: Dial-112, Bihar’s Integrated Emergency Response Support System (ERSS), has completed three years since its launch, emerging as a beacon of hope for citizens across the state. Official data shows the service has provided rapid assistance to over 40 lakh (4 million) people during this period.
Speaking at an event to mark the milestone on July 7 Director General of Police Vinay Kumar honoured police personnel for their dedicated service. He stated that Dial-112 receives around 65,000 calls daily, with emergency help reaching citizens within an average of 15 minutes.
Bihar now ranks second in the country for quick call response under Dial-112. The helpline integrates police, ambulance, fire, highway patrol, and disaster response services under a single number. Currently, the state operates 1,833 emergency vehicles, including 1,283 four-wheelers and 550 two-wheelers, with around 6,000 people helped every day.
Key data reveals the wide scope of assistance provided by Dial-112:
- Domestic violence and women-child crimes: over 3.57 lakh cases
- Local disputes and violence: over 21.79 lakh cases
- Road accidents: over 1.84 lakh cases
- Fire incidents: over 1.15 lakh cases
Launched in September 2024, the ‘Safe Travel Facility’ for women has enhanced safety for solo female travellers. Women can now share their travel details with the police, enabling technical surveillance throughout the journey. Emergency Response Vehicles (ERVs) are dispatched immediately when needed. Bihar is the third state in the country to provide this security cover.
The call taker centre in Patna is operated by women police personnel, making the service more sensitive and accessible for women in distress. This initiative has further strengthened women’s empowerment efforts in Bihar.
Officials describe Dial-112 as ‘Sankat Mochan’, meaning crisis solver, reflecting its role in addressing emergencies ranging from domestic violence to road accidents. The success of this service demonstrates how technological integration, rapid response, and human sensitivity can build an effective security infrastructure.
