Patna: A tender worth Rs 36.38 crore has been issued for the development and upgradation of Birpur Airport in Supaul district, in a move aimed at strengthening regional air connectivity.
Deputy chief minister Samrat Chaudhary said the airport would be developed with modern infrastructure and facilities to support improved passenger services in the region. The project has been given a completion deadline of 15 months.

As part of the upgrade, a pre-fabricated steel structure terminal building will be constructed at the airport. A pre-engineered air traffic control (ATC) tower will also be built as part of the project.
Officials said additional infrastructure, including a pre-engineered fire station and other airport-related buildings, will also be developed to ensure operational safety and passenger convenience.
The airport is planned to be developed to handle Code-2B category aircraft, which will allow small and medium-sized aircraft to operate from the facility.

Once operational, the upgraded airport is expected to improve connectivity for residents of Supaul and neighbouring districts, including Madhubani, Madhepura, Saharsa and Araria. The project is also expected to benefit people living in areas close to the Nepal border.
Officials said the improved connectivity could help stimulate economic activity in the region by making travel faster and more accessible.
Chaudhary said the state government was working to expand aviation infrastructure across Bihar to improve connectivity and support development.
He noted that a tender worth Rs 43.13 crore had recently been issued for runway construction at the upcoming airport in Muzaffarpur.
Similarly, the Airports Authority of India has issued a tender worth Rs 38.64 crore for the development and upgradation of Valmikinagar Airport.
The deputy chief minister added that the government was also pursuing plans for an airport in Saharsa, where work is expected to begin soon.
