Patna/Buxar: A 16-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh survived a suicide attempt on Wednesday morning after leaping from the old Ganga bridge in Buxar, Bihar, according to local police.
The teenager, identified as a resident of Baraon village in Ballia district, reached the midpoint of the bridge at around 8:30 am, removed her sandals and jumped into the river, witnesses said. A handwritten note bearing the words “Sorry Papa” was later found beneath the footwear.
Several fishermen happened to be working beneath the bridge at the time. Seeing the splash, they manoeuvred their boats to the spot and pulled the girl from the water. She was handed over to police officers responding to emergency calls made by passersby and taken to Sadar Hospital, where she is receiving treatment.
“We have informed her family, who are on their way,” said Manoj Kumar Singh, the station house officer at Nagar police station. “The girl is from Ballia in UP. Once her condition stabilizes, we will speak to her to understand why she took this step.”
Authorities say the note will be crucial for the investigation. Early assumptions suggest distress linked to family circumstances, but police have urged against speculation until the girl is interviewed.
India’s National Crime Records Bureau reports that suicide attempts among minors have risen in recent years, with mental health advocates calling for improved access to adolescent counselling services and awareness programmes.
