Patna: The Bihar government has approved the establishment of a Center of Excellence for Autism in Gardanibagh, Patna, to improve diagnosis, treatment and support services for children with autism across the state.
The proposed facility will be developed on a 4.55-acre plot previously earmarked for a multi-specialty hospital. The State Cabinet has approved the proposal, though the government has not yet announced a timeline for the start of construction.
Focus On Early Identification And Therapy
According to officials from the Health Department, the centre is being planned in response to a growing number of autism cases reported among children in Bihar.
The department said the government intends to strengthen autism screening systems from the block level to the state level to ensure early symptoms are identified at an early stage.
The facility will offer preliminary diagnosis, speech therapy, behavioural therapy, specialised training and access to medical experts. It will also function as a research and training hub for autism-related studies and professional development.
Relief For Families Seeking Treatment
Officials said the project is expected to reduce the need for families to travel outside Bihar for treatment and therapy services.
At present, many parents seek medical consultation and therapy support in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, often resulting in significant financial and logistical challenges.
Health experts have stated that early diagnosis and timely intervention can improve behavioural development, learning outcomes and social interaction among children with autism.
Support Services For Parents
In addition to child-focused services, the centre will also provide counselling and guidance for parents and caregivers.
The Health Department said the institution is intended to create a comprehensive support system for families while expanding specialised autism care infrastructure within Bihar.
