Patna: The chief minister of Bihar, Samrat Chaudhary, visited the newly built Bapu Tower in Gardanibagh, Patna, on Sunday, calling it a major tribute to the life and ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. During his visit, he explored all floors of the building and reviewed the various exhibits that showcase different phases of Gandhi’s life. He began the visit by offering floral tribute at Gandhi’s statue located within the premises, marking the importance of the site as a place of remembrance as well as learning.
Bapu Tower has been designed as a modern museum that combines history with technology. The chief minister closely observed galleries filled with murals, digital screens, cutouts and projections that narrate Gandhi’s journey—from his early life in London and South Africa to his leadership in India’s freedom struggle.
A special “turntable theatre” in the orientation hall uses rotating screens to present a visual story of Gandhi’s life, making it engaging for visitors, especially young people. Digital versions of books like Bapu Ki Paati and Mohan Se Mahatma have also been included to ensure that students can easily access and understand his ideas.
The building itself is divided into two main sections—a rectangular block and a tall conical structure that stands about 102 feet high. The conical section includes five ramps that guide visitors through key historical moments such as the Champaran Satyagraha, the Quit India Movement, and events leading up to India’s independence. These ramps present stories of Gandhi’s efforts during times of conflict, his role in promoting peace, and his work among people in Bihar and other parts of the country. The exhibits also reflect his values of non-violence, unity and social reform.
The chief minister said the tower is not only a symbol of Gandhi’s legacy but also an important educational centre for the public. He instructed officials to include Bapu Tower in school tour programmes along with places like the Bihar Museum, the Patna Museum and Science City Patna. He also asked departments to improve facilities and ensure that more visitors can easily access the site. With free entry for school groups and a focus on interactive learning, the government hopes Bapu Tower will help the younger generation better understand Gandhi’s life, his philosophy and his lasting impact on India.
