Patna: Bihar is reeling under cold wave-like conditions as icy winds from Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh sweep through the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that western disturbances will persist until January 19, resulting in overcast skies across several districts, including Rohtas, Buxar, Bhojpur, Arwal, Patna, Jehanabad, Gaya, Aurangabad, and Nalanda.
The reduced difference between minimum and maximum temperatures, caused by westerly winds, has intensified the chill. In Patna, the maximum temperature on Wednesday dropped to 16.2°C, while the minimum stood at 13°C—a mere 3.2°C difference that amplified the cold.
Although the IMD has not issued a cold wave alert for Thursday, a warning of dense fog has been issued for 17 districts over the next five days. Poor visibility at Patna airport has already caused delays in the arrival and departure of 13 flight pairs.
The IMD has forecast a further drop in minimum temperatures by 2–3°C starting January 18. A cyclonic circulation near Rajasthan is drawing moisture from the Arabian Sea, causing snowfall in northern mountainous regions. While rain is likely in the plains, Bihar is expected to remain dry, albeit with cloudy skies and dense fog in the coming days.
In response to the cold conditions, Patna District Magistrate Dr. Chandrashekhar Singh has ordered the closure of all private and government schools up to Class 8 until January 18.
The cold spell is expected to worsen, with meteorologists predicting a significant dip in temperatures, urging residents to take precautions.
