Patna: The impact of Cyclone Montha, which formed over the Bay of Bengal earlier this week, has begun to unfold in Bihar. On Wednesday, light rainfall and humid conditions were recorded in several parts of the state, including the capital Patna, marking the storm’s first influence over the region.
According to a report by the Patna Meteorological Centre, the system will intensify rainfall activity over the next three days — October 30, 31, and November 1 — with heavy rain and thunderstorms expected across multiple districts.
Red and orange alerts issued
The Met department has issued a red alert for West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Darbhanga, and Supaul districts for October 30, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and potential flooding.
An orange alert is also in effect for Muzaffarpur, Saran, Vaishali, Buxar, Kaimur, Rohtas, Aurangabad, Arwal, Madhepura, and Saharsa, where intense showers and strong winds are expected.
Meteorologists have advised residents in northern and northwestern Bihar to avoid low-lying areas, as waterlogging and disruption to transport and electricity supply are likely.
Widespread rain forecast for October 31
On October 31, the storm’s effects are expected to spread further eastward, bringing heavy rainfall to Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, West Champaran, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Madhepura, Saharsa, Purnia, and Katihar districts.
The intensity of rainfall will gradually decrease by November 1, though light to moderate showers may persist in Seemanchal and eastern Bihar.
Relief expected after November 1
Weather officials said the cyclone, which has weakened into a low-pressure system, will continue to move northwards before dissipating. Once the system clears, temperatures are expected to drop by 3–4°C, bringing a brief post-monsoon chill to the state.
“The next 48 hours are crucial for Bihar. Residents should remain alert, especially in flood-prone areas,” an official from the Patna Meteorological Centre said.
With Cyclone Montha moving inland, Bihar braces for a wet and windy end to October — before the skies finally begin to clear in early November.
