Darbhanga: In an unprecedented legal development, police in Darbhanga, have filed a first information report (FIR) naming all Brahmins of a village as accused in a violent dispute over an unpaid debt. Twelve people have been taken into custody in connection with the incident.
The case originates from Harinagar village under the Kusheshwarsthan police station area. According to police reports, an application submitted by resident Asarfi Paswan named 70 Brahmin villagers and 100–150 unidentified individuals as accused.

The dispute reportedly dates back to 2015, when Kailash Paswan, elder brother of Vikram Paswan, constructed a house for Hemant Jha, another Harinagar resident. The Paswans claim that approximately Rs 2.5 lakh remains unpaid for the construction work, despite repeated demands.
The FIR alleges that tensions escalated into violence on January 31, 2026 when a group of men, including Hemant Jha and several members of the Jha family, allegedly entered the Paswan residence and attacked family members with sticks and other weapons. Women and a child were injured in the assault, which was captured in a live video circulating online.
Birouli DSP Prabhakar Tiwari stated: “The incident of violence occurred due to an old financial dispute. Some people are trying to give it a communal angle. The police are investigating the matter. Security has been increased in the village following the incident. The situation is tense but under control.”
The National Crime Investigation Bureau (NCIB), an NGO that advocates for citizens’ legal rights, has shared details of the case, highlighting that many of the accused Brahmins work as laborers in Delhi and Mumbai to support their families.
The filing of an FIR against an entire community is highly unusual, raising questions about collective responsibility in legal proceedings and the potential social impact on the village, which remains tense in the aftermath of the violence.
