Rohtas: The Indian Railways has approved the revival of the long-defunct Dehri-Banjari railway line in Rohtas, marking a significant step towards improving connectivity and boosting local development.
The line, which has remained closed for nearly 40 years, will be redeveloped in phases. In the first phase, a 36.4km stretch will be constructed at an estimated cost of around Rs 1,112 lakh, officials said.
The project has historical significance, dating back to 1911 when it operated as the Dehri Rohtas Light Railway. At the time, it served as a crucial industrial lifeline for the region, particularly for the industries located in Dalmianagar.
The railway line was used to transport limestone for cement production and bamboo for the paper industry, while also handling substantial passenger traffic. Records from 1913-14 indicate that it carried more than 50,000 passengers and around 90,000 tonnes of freight annually.
Although plans to revive the line were first announced in 2008, the project saw little progress for years. However, renewed efforts and public advocacy have helped bring it back into focus.
The initiative gained momentum in 2024 after representations were made by local groups, including ‘Team Dehriyans’, leading to fresh approval from the Railways.
Officials say the revival is expected to significantly enhance access to key tourist and religious destinations in the district, including Rohtasgarh Fort, Tutla Bhawani Temple and Kashish Waterfall.
Beyond tourism, the project is also expected to create new employment opportunities and support industrial growth by improving the transport of mineral resources.
Authorities believe the revival of the railway line will play a key role in strengthening the region’s economy and providing long-term benefits to local communities.
