Patna: This year, uncertainty over the Diwali date has led to widespread confusion, with the new moon day—or Amavasya—spanning two days, October 20 and 21. The key question for devotees has been: on which night should Lakshmi Puja and the lighting of lamps take place?
According to astrologers and religious texts, Diwali 2025 will be celebrated on the night of October 20. The Amavasya of Kartik month begins at 3:44 pm on October 20 and continues until 5:54 pm on October 21. Despite its extension into the next day, astrologers advise that since Diwali is traditionally a night festival, worship and celebrations on the evening of October 20 will be most auspicious.
Astrologer told that Diwali is closely associated with night-time rituals, especially during Pradosh Kaal and Nishith Kaal. “This year, these three auspicious timings coincide on the night of October 20. Performing Lakshmi Puja on this night brings blessings from the goddess and enhances prosperity in the home,” he said.
He also noted that October 20 falls under the influence of Kali Chaudas, an auspicious occasion linked with Diwali. Lighting lamps and offering prayers on this night, he explained, attracts happiness, wealth and positive energy.
On October 21, while Amavasya will last until 5:43 pm, neither Pradosh Kaal nor Nishith Kaal will occur during that time. Hence, astrologers say the main celebration should not be held that night. However, those wishing to perform rituals at workplaces or establishments can do so in the morning of October 21.
Unlike most Hindu festivals that follow the Udaya Tithi (the lunar day at sunrise), Diwali is celebrated according to the Pradosh period of the Amavasya night. Although the Udaya Tithi falls on October 21 this year, the Pradosh and Nishith periods align with the night of October 20.
Therefore, in line with religious scriptures and the lunar calendar, the main Diwali celebrations in 2025 will take place on October 20. Devotees are advised to perform Lakshmi Puja and light lamps on this night to invite peace, prosperity and divine blessings into their homes.
