Patna: The Chandragupt Institute of Management Patna has announced the appointment of Dr Bhaskar Chatterjee as Professor of Practice and chief advisor to its Centre for CSR and ESG Studies Foundation. The institute said the move would strengthen its academic and research focus on corporate responsibility and sustainable development.
Welcoming the appointment, CIMP director Prof Dr Rana Singh said the institute was honoured to have Chatterjee join its academic leadership. He said Chatterjee’s expertise in corporate social responsibility and environmental, social and governance practices would help position CIMP as a national and global voice on sustainable development and responsible business practices.
Chatterjee is widely regarded as the father of CSR in India and served for more than three decades in the Indian Administrative Service. As secretary to the Government of India, he helped frame the CSR and sustainability guidelines for public sector enterprises in 2010 and played a key role in introducing Section 135 in the Companies Act 2013. The provision made India the first country to mandate corporate social responsibility spending by law.
During his career he also served as director general and CEO of the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs and worked as a principal adviser in the Planning Commission. His book CSR The Indian Way is widely cited for presenting India’s CSR framework to a global audience.
Speaking about his new role, Chatterjee said he was excited to work with students and contribute to the institute’s CSR and ESG initiatives. He said the role would allow him to share his experience with future leaders and encourage them to integrate sustainability and inclusivity into business practices.
The CSR and ESG Studies Foundation at CIMP, established in 2023, focuses on research and training related to corporate responsibility, sustainability and governance. The centre works with organisations such as The Energy and Resources Institute and UNICEF to promote inclusive development and climate resilience.
