Muzaffarpur: A team from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized a large consignment of smuggled Chinese garlic from a truck in Muzaffarpur district on Friday. The garlic, valued at approximately ₹28 lakh, was being transported from Nepal to Delhi via Gorakhpur. Two individuals, including the truck driver, were arrested at the scene.
According to DRI sources, the truck carrying 11 tonnes of Chinese garlic had entered India from Nepal through the Loha Border. The smugglers were reportedly planning to sell the consignment in Delhi ahead of the Diwali and Chhath festivals.
The DRI team in Muzaffarpur received intelligence about the smuggling operation and initiated a search operation along the Gorakhpur-Delhi highway. The truck was intercepted during this operation, and upon inspection, authorities found the large consignment of garlic. Both the driver and an accomplice were immediately taken into custody.
During interrogation, the arrested smuggler revealed information about other local smugglers involved in the operation. The DRI has launched further investigations based on these revelations and is expected to take more action against the smuggling network. The duo also disclosed that they were paid a substantial amount to transport the illegal consignment.
The DRI is intensifying its efforts to curb smuggling activities, especially with increased demand for essential goods during the festive season. Further arrests are anticipated as investigations continue.
