Patna: The aftermath of the killing of Mokama strongman Dularchand Yadav has left his family reeling — and his grandson, Neeraj Yadav, forced to abandon his dream of becoming a doctor. Neeraj, who was preparing for his MBBS entrance exams, said he will now “look after” his grandfather’s empire and take care of the family.
Dularchand Yadav was killed on October 30, days before the first phase of polling in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, during a violent clash between supporters of the Janata Dal (United) and the Jan Suraaj Party in Mokama Tal. A postmortem report cited a bullet wound to Yadav’s leg and internal injuries as the cause of death. His family alleged he was shot and then run over by a vehicle.
Speaking to reporters after the incident, Neeraj said his family remains fearful. “We were preparing for MBBS. Now we won’t be able to. There will be cases and lawsuits against us — they’ll put us behind bars in a few days,” he said. “Grandfather’s dream was that I become a doctor and my brother an IPS officer. All dreams have been shattered. I will educate my brother to fulfil that dream, but I can no longer study. I’ll have to take care of the family and my grandfather’s work.”
Neeraj clarified that while he will not enter politics, he intends to preserve the “legacy” his grandfather left behind. His father, a government employee, has remained away from the media since the killing, leaving Neeraj as the family’s public voice.
The violence in Mokama has once again underscored the volatile mix of politics and muscle power in the region. Police have arrested Anant Singh, the JD(U) candidate and former MLA named in the family’s FIR, and said they are preparing to arrest Piyush Priyadarshi, the Jan Suraaj candidate, in connection with the case.
The Mokama constituency is witnessing a high-stakes triangular contest among Anant Singh (JD(U)), Piyush Priyadarshi (Jan Suraj), and Veena Devi of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) — a former Munger MP and wife of another local strongman, Suraj Bhan Singh.
