Patna: Young people are increasingly at risk of hearing loss due to prolonged use of earphones, a senior ENT specialist has warned. Dr Piyush Priy, speaking at a “Doctor’s Advice Program” in Patna on Sunday, said that excessive screen time and frequent use of earphones are taking a toll on the health of the younger generation.
“Continuous use of earphones can even lead to a perforated eardrum and weaken the bones and nerves in the ear,” Dr Priy said, responding to questions from patients across the state via phone. He added that around 20% of young patients visiting the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) outpatient department each day report hearing problems, largely linked to earphone use.
While age-related hearing loss typically begins after 40, the widespread use of personal audio devices is now accelerating these issues among teenagers and young adults.
Dr Priy also highlighted broader health concerns, noting an increase in respiratory infections since the Covid-19 pandemic. “Before the pandemic, people experienced colds and coughs about twice a year on average. Now, it is up to four times a year, partly due to urban pollution and declining immunity,” he said.
He added, Children are increasingly being diagnosed with deviated nasal septums, a condition he advised should be treated early to prevent complications in future medical examinations, including those for government jobs.
