Muzaffarpur/Patna: A team of the Enforcement Directorate conducted searches on Wednesday at the residence of Babita Devi, the elected mukhiya of Bishunpur Baghnagri Model Panchayat in Muzaffarpur’s Sakra block, probing suspected proceeds of crime and financial irregularities linked to alleged illicit liquor trade and disproportionate assets, according to local reports. The operation began around 6 a.m., with about 20 officers securing the premises alongside local police and examining documents, bank accounts, property deeds, and records of financial transactions, with seizures reported though details have not yet been officially disclosed.
Sources cited in multiple reports said the case trail pertains to alleged black money generated from illegal liquor networks, with prior cases reportedly registered against the mukhiya’s husband, Bablu Mishra, and his brother under excise-related offenses. While the ED team carried out the daylong search, a crowd gathered outside the residence amid heightened curiosity and political chatter in the area. Babita Devi, who has been recognized for her public work and is reported to have received a President’s award, came under sharper public scrutiny as the search unfolded, though her family has stated they are cooperating fully with the investigation.
Officials are yet to make public any inventory of recovered items or quantify assets under question, and no arrest had been reported at the time of publication.
