Muzaffarpur: The Election Commission of India has issued a notice to Nirmala Devi, mayor of Muzaffarpur Municipal Corporation in Bihar, over allegations of holding two voter identification cards. The notice, sent on Wednesday by the Electoral Registration Officer of the Muzaffarpur Assembly constituency, requires the mayor to submit her response within three days.
Nirmala Devi is accused of having her name registered at two separate addresses during the recent Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list, a duplication that reportedly existed even before the exercise. Opposition parties, including the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), have raised the matter, prompting intervention by the Election Commission.
The notice directs the mayor to file her reply by 5pm on Saturday. Speaking at a press conference in Patna on Wednesday, Bihar Assembly opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav alleged that both the mayor and her relatives possess two separate EPIC numbers within the same assembly constituency.
