Muzaffarpur: Electric buses are set to begin operations on seven routes from Muzaffarpur under the central government’s PM-eBus Sewa initiative, with a dedicated charging facility at the Imalichatti depot nearing completion.
Officials said around 80% of the construction work on the charging centre has been completed, and final preparations are underway ahead of the launch. A central inspection team recently reviewed the site, offering technical suggestions to speed up completion.
Once operational, the facility will be able to charge 14 to 15 buses simultaneously, enabling the rollout of services across the city and surrounding regions. Authorities say the project is aimed at introducing cleaner, more modern public transport while reducing vehicular emissions.
Seven routes have been finalised for the initial phase of operations. These include services connecting Muzaffarpur with Patna, Darbhanga, Motihari, Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Aurai and Katra Chamunda Sthan. The number of buses allocated to each route has also been planned to ensure regular service for commuters.
The electric bus network is part of a wider state-level plan to deploy around 400 electric buses across Bihar. Alongside Muzaffarpur, services are expected to be introduced in Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Darbhanga and Purnia. The government has allocated approximately Rs 62.83 crore for charging infrastructure and related facilities in these cities.
Transport officials say the initiative is expected to improve daily commuting options, ease pressure on existing transport systems and contribute to better traffic management. It is also likely to generate employment opportunities in operations and maintenance as the network expands.
