Patna: Tech billionaire Elon Musk has launched a new AI-powered online encyclopedia called Grokipedia, describing it as a “better alternative to Wikipedia”. Developed by his artificial intelligence company xAI, the platform went live on Tuesday morning but experienced an immediate crash due to a surge in user traffic.
Grokipedia has been designed as a hybrid between a search engine and a knowledge repository. Unlike interactive chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini, or Musk’s own Grok, Grokipedia functions as a direct information portal. Users can simply type a topic—such as “Paris”—and receive a comprehensive overview instantly.
The website, grokipedia.com, features a sleek black-themed interface but currently lacks multilingual support. Reports suggest that much of its content is still adapted from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 License, meaning large portions of the encyclopedia rely on pre-existing open data.
While Musk claims Grokipedia offers “AI-verified” accuracy, experts are divided on whether the platform can match Wikipedia’s reliability. Unlike Wikipedia’s community-verified model, Grokipedia’s verification depends on artificial intelligence algorithms—raising questions about transparency and trust.
Speaking to the media, Lauren Dickinson, a spokesperson for the Wikimedia Foundation, said, “It’s clear that Grokipedia still depends on Wikipedia’s open content. Our non-profit and ad-free model has ensured trust and neutrality for over two decades.”
