Bhagalpur: The Energy Department has stepped up restoration efforts on a war footing to repair electricity infrastructure damaged by a severe cyclone, accompanied by high winds and heavy rainfall that affected Bhagalpur, Purnia, Banka and Katihar districts on the night of May 25–26.
Managing Director of South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (SBPDCL) and Bihar State Power Transmission Company Limited (BSPTCL), Rahul Kumar (IAS), reached Bhagalpur on May 27 to assess the situation. He was accompanied by the chief engineer and a technical team.
High-Level Review of Damage
Upon arrival, the Managing Director held a review meeting with the Bhagalpur District Magistrate, superintending engineer, and executive engineers of Bhagalpur, Naugachhia and Banka divisions.
Officials assessed the extent of damage to power infrastructure and reviewed the current status of electricity supply across affected regions. The meeting focused on disruption caused by fallen poles, damaged wires and other electrical equipment.

Restoration on War Footing
During the review, the Managing Director directed officials to ensure that restoration work is carried out urgently in all affected areas where blackout conditions persist.
He instructed that electricity supply must be restored at the earliest in both urban and rural pockets, and warned that any negligence in the restoration process would not be tolerated.
Field Operations and Monitoring
According to the Managing Director, departmental teams are continuously working on-site to repair and replace damaged infrastructure. Restoration work has been expedited to minimise disruption for consumers.
He further noted that progress is being monitored regularly through coordination between the District Magistrate’s office and the Energy Department via field reports and telephonic updates.
Government Support and Coordination
The administration has been instructed to maintain close coordination with relevant departments to ensure public safety and efficient recovery operations.
The State Government is also providing necessary resources to support relief and rehabilitation efforts in the cyclone-affected areas.
