Patna: A sudden fire broke out on Sunday afternoon at Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH), one of Bihar’s largest hospitals. The blaze started in a storeroom on the ground floor of the hospital’s utility building. Thick smoke spread across the campus, causing panic among patients and their families. Despite the chaos, no one was injured, and the fire was brought under control within 45 minutes by the firefighters.
Fire officials said the storeroom contained dialysis-related supplies, dispensary materials, universal kits, four fans, and other items. Most of these could not be saved due to the thick smoke. Loddipur Fire Sub-Divisional Officer Ajit Kumar and his team rushed to the scene with six fire vehicles and worked swiftly to control the flames. People in nearby areas were evacuated as a safety precaution while the fire was being extinguished.
District Fire Officer Manoj Nat said that the fire likely started due to a short circuit. He explained that the storeroom had been used to store some unused materials while a new building was under construction. “The fire broke out suddenly, but timely action prevented any injuries,” he said. Investigations into the exact cause of the fire are ongoing.
This is the fourth fire incident reported on the PMCH campus in recent years. Following earlier incidents, a five-member inspection team visited the hospital on the orders of the Patna District Magistrate. They issued strict instructions to ensure safety and prevent such accidents in the future. Hospital authorities said they are reviewing safety measures once again to avoid similar incidents.
