Patna: Five candidates of Bihar origin have secured victories in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, with three representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and two from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Among them, Sanjeev Jha, originally from Madhubani, has been elected for the fourth time from Burari.
The newly elected MLAs from Bihar are Abhay Verma (Darbhanga), Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh (Buxar) and Chandan Kumar Chaudhary (Khagaria) from the BJP, while Anil Jha (Madhubani) and Sanjeev Jha (Madhubani) won on AAP tickets. However, AAP’s Vinay Mishra, son of veteran leader Mahabal Mishra, lost from the Dwarka seat.
Abhay Verma, vice-president of Delhi BJP and a lawyer by profession, secured 65,858 votes from the Laxmi Nagar constituency, defeating AAP’s BB Tyagi by 11,542 votes. Anil Jha, a resident of Barha village in Madhubani’s Benipatti block, claimed victory in Kirari, defeating BJP’s Bajrang Shukla by 21,871 votes. Jha, a three-time MLA, had previously won twice on a BJP ticket before switching to AAP.
Chandan Kumar Chaudhary, originally from Chakprayag village in Khagaria’s Parbatta block, won from Sangam Vihar on a BJP ticket with 54,049 votes, narrowly defeating AAP’s Dinesh Mohaniya by 344 votes. His victory sparked celebrations in his native village, where residents marked the occasion with sweets and festivities at the local Mahavir temple.
Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh, whose ancestral home is in Buxar’s Dharauli village, secured over 1.35 lakh votes, winning his seat with a margin of approximately 13,000 votes. His elder brother, Manoj Singh, is an advocate in the Supreme Court.
The victories mark a strong presence of Bihar-origin leaders in Delhi politics, with celebrations reported in their respective hometowns.
