Patna: Patna is set to witness a major overhaul in its traffic system near Jaya Prakash Narayan International Airport as authorities prepare for increased passenger footfall with the new terminal expected to be operational from April. The process of selecting a consultant to redesign traffic flow around the airport has begun, with the final selection expected next month.
Officials have been considering multiple proposals, including the construction of an elevated road or an underpass at the entry and exit points of the new terminal. After a site inspection, experts suggested that an elevated road could be built towards Raj Bhavan, while an underpass might be constructed on the Sheikhpura side. Another possibility under discussion is an elevated road from the terminal’s exit point to Aranya Bhawan, with a ramp connecting to the Veterinary College.
High-Level Inspections and Planning
A team led by District Magistrate Dr Chandrashekhar Singh, SSP Avkash Kumar, and Traffic SP Aparajit Lohan has already conducted an on-site inspection to assess traffic challenges. Based on their findings, the Chief Secretary has directed the Bihar State Road Development Corporation (BSPDC) to evaluate and submit detailed proposals for the new traffic system. The traffic department has been given 15 days to submit its report.
A source confirmed that the consultant will make the final decision on whether an elevated road, an underpass, or alternative measures should be implemented. The study will also take into account the planned metro station near Patna airport, ensuring a comprehensive traffic solution.
Surge in Passenger Traffic Expected
With the new terminal set to open, authorities anticipate passenger numbers to increase four to five times, significantly adding to traffic congestion. The new traffic system and supporting infrastructure aim to ensure smoother movement around the airport and reduce bottlenecks.
A final decision on the traffic redesign is expected once the consultant completes its detailed study next month.
