Nawada: The historic and mythologically significant town of Sitamarhi in Bihar’s Nawada district is witnessing a steady rise in foreign tourist arrivals, marking a significant shift for a destination that remained outside the mainstream tourism circuit for years.
In January and February 2026 alone, nearly six dozen international visitors arrived in Sitamarhi, a development tourism observers describe as an encouraging sign for the district’s growing tourism landscape. Experts believe that if the current trend continues, Sitamarhi could soon emerge alongside established destinations such as Rajgir and Bodh Gaya on Bihar’s tourism map.
The area is home to the ancient Sitamarhi Temple, the revered Lav Kush Khuta, and the spiritually significant Maharshi Valmiki Ashram. These sites hold deep religious, cultural and historical importance. Visitors say the spiritual atmosphere and scenic surroundings add to the appeal.
In February, a group of around 30 tourists from France visited the temple complex and performed rituals in accordance with local traditions. The visitors interacted with priests to learn about Sanatan traditions, saint culture and meditation practices. Several members of the group also meditated within the temple premises and later shared their spiritual experiences.
Foreign guests said Sitamarhi is not merely a religious destination but a living reflection of Indian culture, where spirituality, tradition and human values converge. Many said they were deeply impressed by the simplicity of rural life and the warmth of the local community.
Residents attribute the recent increase in tourist footfall to improvements in road connectivity, cleanliness and basic infrastructure. Locals and tourism stakeholders believe that with stronger promotion, better accommodation facilities and expanded visitor amenities, Sitamarhi could soon establish a firm presence on the international tourism map.
The growing influx of foreign travellers signals a new chapter for Nawada district, positioning Sitamarhi as an emerging heritage and spiritual tourism destination in Bihar.
