Darbhanga: A demand has been raised to build a four-lane road connecting Darbhanga airport to National Highway-27 to improve travel and reduce traffic problems. Senior JDU leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Jha has written a letter to Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari, stressing that better road connectivity has become very important as the number of passengers using the airport continues to grow. He said the new civil enclave at the airport needs a wide and safe road so that travellers can reach on time without difficulty.
In his letter, Jha explained that people from Mithilanchal and nearby districts depend heavily on Darbhanga airport for air travel. Since flight services began, the airport has seen a steady increase in passengers. However, the existing roads leading to the airport are narrow and not designed to handle such heavy traffic. As a result, travellers often face traffic jams, delays and safety concerns, especially during peak hours.
He pointed out that Darbhanga airport is becoming an important air centre for north Bihar and its importance will grow further in the coming years. To prepare for this growth, he suggested building a direct four-lane road from NH-27, along with a proper interchange and an underpass. According to him, this will help reduce congestion, make travel smoother and support the overall development of the region.
Jha also mentioned that the proposed road project is not yet included in the National Highways Authority of India’s annual action plan. He has requested the central government to give priority to this project so that it can be taken up soon. He said good road connectivity is necessary to achieve the goals of the UDAN scheme, which aims to make air travel affordable and accessible for common people.
The MP shared information about the letter on social media platform X, saying that better road access will help in faster movement and economic growth through improved connectivity. Darbhanga airport, located near NH-27, started regular flights in November 2020 and has become a major travel facility for the Mithila region. There are also future plans to develop it into an international airport, making strong road infrastructure even more important.
