Patna: India’s Olympic-medal-winning badminton star Saina Nehwal will spearhead a new initiative to identify and nurture young shuttlecock talent across Bihar, saying the state has “no shortage of ability” if given the right training and opportunities.
Nehwal, who became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic badminton medal, met senior officials, including Bihar sports minister Shreyasi Singh, the department’s additional chief secretary, and representatives from the Bihar State Sports Authority in Patna on Monday.
Speaking to the media alongside her father, Dr Harvir Singh, Nehwal said she was “delighted” at the prospect of helping young players refine their skills. She highlighted improvements in the state’s sporting infrastructure and stressed that structured training could dramatically improve outcomes for Bihar’s athletes.
Under the programme, Nehwal is expected to travel to different cities across the state to scout promising badminton players. Those selected will gain access to tailored coaching and become eligible for special scholarships and training opportunities.
Officials also said the initiative would extend to coaching sessions at institutions such as Eklavya schools, with the aim of strengthening grassroots sporting culture and encouraging youth participation.
Nehwal’s involvement reflects a broader push within Bihar to build on recent successes in youth sport and shift perceptions of the state as a hinterland for athletic talent. With targeted support, state authorities hope to see young athletes make their mark at national and international levels.
