New Delhi: Connectivity between Bihar and Uttar Pradesh is set for a major upgrade as the central government has approved the construction of two four-lane bridges over the Gandak river on National Highway 727.
The project, estimated at around Rs 4,790.65 crore, is expected to begin this year and is being seen as strategically important due to its proximity to the Nepal border.
Officials said the first bridge, along with its approach road, will be approximately 5.58km long in Bagaha-1. The second, significantly longer structure of about 19.50km, will connect Malpulwa-Ekanamra Road in Bagaha directly to Kushinagar’s Belvania area in Uttar Pradesh.
The new infrastructure is expected to substantially reduce travel distances and time. The distance between Bettiah and Gorakhpur will shrink from around 160km to 125km, while Kushinagar will effectively come 30km closer.
Authorities said the project will also bring economic benefits to the region by improving transport efficiency and enabling faster movement of goods and people.
The Bihar State Road Development Corporation Limited (BSRDCL) has been tasked with executing the project. Officials said improved connectivity is likely to boost trade, tourism and industrial activity in West Champaran.
The development is also expected to generate employment opportunities for local youth, both during the construction phase and through increased economic activity after completion.
With easier access for travellers, including those coming from Nepal, the project is expected to significantly cut travel time, transforming regional connectivity and economic prospects in the area.
