Gaya: Gaya Junction is set to receive upgraded passenger facilities, including escalators and lifts, as the East Central Railway moves forward with plans to modernise one of Bihar’s busiest railway stations.
Railway officials have completed a technical survey of the station, identified suitable locations for the new installations and submitted a detailed proposal to the railway headquarters for approval. Construction will begin after the proposal is cleared and the tendering process is completed.
Proposal Awaiting Approval
According to railway officials, the proposal is currently under consideration at the headquarters level. Once approved, the project will move into the tendering stage before work begins on installing the escalators and lifts.
The development forms part of the railways’ ongoing efforts to improve passenger amenities at Gaya Junction, which serves thousands of travellers every day.
Improving Accessibility
At present, passengers use the stairs, on the foot over bridge to move between platforms. The lack of escalators and lifts often creates difficulties for elderly passengers, people with disabilities, pregnant women, families travelling with young children and those carrying heavy luggage.
Railway officials said the proposed facilities are expected to make movement within the station safer and more convenient for all passengers.
Preparing For Peak Travel Seasons
Gaya Junction experiences a significant increase in passenger traffic during the annual Pitru Paksha fair, Buddhist pilgrimage season and other major religious events, attracting visitors from across India and overseas.
Officials said improved infrastructure would help manage larger crowds and enhance the overall travel experience during peak periods.
Part of A Wider Modernisation Drive
The proposed escalators and lifts are part of a broader programme to upgrade passenger facilities at Gaya Junction. The railway administration said development works are being implemented in phases to improve accessibility and modernise the station’s infrastructure.
Construction is expected to begin after the railway headquarters grants approval and the tendering process is completed.
