Gaya/Patna: A hostel for working women, Akanksha-cum-Sakhi Niwas, was inaugurated in Gaya on Thursday, marking an expansion of Bihar’s efforts to provide safe and affordable accommodation for women in the workforce.
The facility, set up under the state’s Mukhyamantri Nari Shakti Yojana and the central government’s Mission Shakti Yojana, will be operated by the Women and Child Development Corporation under the supervision of the social welfare department.
The inauguration was carried out virtually from Patna by Bandana Preyashi, secretary of the department, while officials and local representatives attended the event in Gaya.
Expansion Of Women’s Hostels
With existing facilities already operational in Patna and Muzaffarpur, the Gaya hostel adds to the state’s growing network of accommodation for working women. Officials said similar hostels are planned in Darbhanga and Bhagalpur in the near future.
The newly inaugurated hostel can accommodate up to 50 women and has appointed essential staff, including a superintendent, assistant superintendent and cook.
Affordable And Secure Living
Speaking at the launch, Preyashi said the initiative responds to the increasing participation of women in both government and private sectors, highlighting the need for safe housing close to workplaces.
The hostel offers accommodation and food facilities at a subsidised rate of Rs 3,000 per month, aimed particularly at women working away from their home districts.
Amenities at the facility include beds, lockers, tables and chairs, 24-hour CCTV surveillance, electricity, RO drinking water, television and free Wi-Fi.
Eligibility And Application Process
To avail of the facility, applicants must have a monthly income of not more than Rs 75,000. Admissions will be processed through an online application system on a first-come, first-served basis, followed by counselling.
Applicants will be required to submit documents including proof of employment within the district, identity proof, appointment letters, salary slips and details of a local guardian. Additional documentation will be needed in cases of disability.
Officials said the hostel will function under direct supervision to ensure a safe and dignified environment for residents, with the broader aim of promoting women’s independence and participation in the workforce.
