Gopalganj: Authorities in Gopalganj have announced a crackdown on tractors operating without number plates, citing growing concerns over road safety and the inability to trace vehicles involved in accidents.
Beginning July 20, the district traffic police, under the leadership of Traffic DSP Somesh Mishra, will launch a campaign targeting unregistered tractors. Vehicles found flouting the rules will be seized and their owners fined. The drive follows orders from Superintendent of Police Awadhesh Dixit, who has directed traffic personnel to enforce strict action against unauthorised tractor movement across the district.
“People are losing their lives in daily accidents involving tractors that often go untraceable due to the lack of registration plates,” said DSP Mishra. “These vehicles are frequently overloaded with materials such as sand, iron rods, and bricks, and are being driven in blatant disregard of traffic norms.”
The campaign aims to reduce the number of accidents caused by poorly regulated tractors, which are often seen overloaded and driven recklessly. Mishra added that the Transport Department will also assist in the enforcement efforts.
Concerns have also been raised about underage driving. In a recent incident near Bhathwan turn in Kuchaykot, a minor driving a tractor struck a motorcycle, leaving the rider seriously injured. Locals apprehended the minor and handed him over to police. Officials say such cases highlight the urgent need for accountability and vehicle identification.
