Patna: The Gorakhpur-Siliguri Greenfield Expressway is being developed as a major transport corridor linking Bihar more closely with Northeast India, while also improving access to Nepal and Bangladesh.
Once completed, the six-lane access-controlled expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between western Bihar and Siliguri, a strategically important gateway to the Northeast. The project is being viewed as a key infrastructure initiative with the potential to stimulate trade, tourism and employment across the region.
At present, road travel between Gopalganj and Siliguri typically takes around nine to ten hours and covers a distance of approximately 512 kilometres. With the new expressway in place, the distance is expected to be reduced to about 435 kilometres, bringing the journey time down to nearly five hours.
Strategic Link to the Northeast
The expressway will pass through parts of Bihar and West Bengal before reaching Siliguri, a city situated near the borders of Nepal and Bangladesh. Siliguri is also home to the strategically significant “Chicken’s Neck” corridor, the narrow stretch of land that connects mainland India to its northeastern states.
Improved connectivity to this corridor is expected to facilitate smoother movement of passengers and freight while strengthening economic ties between eastern India and the Northeast.
The expressway has been designed as a six-lane, access-controlled highway, allowing vehicles to travel at speeds of up to 120 kmph. Controlled entry and exit points are expected to improve traffic flow and enhance road safety.

Economic Opportunities Along the Route
Experts believe the project could trigger economic growth in towns and villages located along the corridor. Increased traffic is expected to encourage the development of hotels, roadside eateries, fuel stations and other commercial establishments, generating new employment opportunities for local residents.
The improved transport network is also expected to benefit farmers by providing quicker access to larger markets. Faster freight movement could reduce transportation costs and improve the efficiency of supply chains, strengthening rural economies in the process.
Boost for Tourism and Trade
The expressway is expected to enhance connectivity to popular tourist destinations such as Darjeeling, Sikkim, Gangtok, Assam and Meghalaya. Easier road access could encourage greater tourist movement while supporting hospitality and service industries across the region.
The corridor will also connect with other major expressways, improving long-distance road travel and potentially reducing journey times to major cities, including Delhi.
Infrastructure and transport experts view the Gorakhpur-Siliguri Expressway as a significant project for eastern India, arguing that it could strengthen economic integration between Bihar and the Northeast while improving access to neighbouring countries and key trade routes.
