Patna: Senior journalist and Rajya Sabha deputy chair Harivansh Narayan Singh has been renominated to the upper house of parliament by Droupadi Murmu, a day after the conclusion of his previous term.
The President’s decision ensures the continuation of Singh’s parliamentary role, amid speculation in political circles following the end of his tenure on April 9. He fills a nominated seat that fell vacant after the term of Ranjan Gogoi ended.
Singh, 69, has previously represented Bihar in the Rajya Sabha on two occasions and currently serves as the deputy chairman of the house. His reappointment is widely seen as recognition of his measured and non-partisan conduct in presiding over proceedings.
Before entering politics, Singh built a long career in journalism and is an alumnus of Banaras Hindu University. He entered the Rajya Sabha in 2014 with the backing of Janata Dal (United), earning a reputation for his understated style and focus on parliamentary decorum.
Since being re-elected deputy chairman in September 2020, Singh has overseen the functioning of the house during often contentious sessions, seeking to balance the demands of the government and the opposition. His conduct in the chair has drawn praise across the political spectrum, including from the prime minister, Narendra Modi, and opposition leaders.
Known for his calm approach amid disruptions, Singh has emphasised adherence to parliamentary rules while ensuring members are given the opportunity to voice their views.
