Patna: With the monsoon now fully active across Bihar, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued rain alerts for 16 districts today, warning of continued downpours throughout the week. Of these, 13 districts are under an orange alert, while three districts have been placed under a yellow alert.
According to the IMD, heavy rain accompanied by lightning is expected to lash several parts of the state over the next seven days. “People need to remain vigilant, as some areas may experience extremely heavy rainfall,” the department cautioned.
Rain Disrupts Life in Several Districts
On Monday, heavy rainfall was reported in at least 12 districts including Buxar, Supaul, Nawada, Gopalganj, Araria, and Nalanda. Patna experienced light rain followed by a brief period of sunshine, but waterlogging was reported in several areas, especially outside Patna Junction railway station.
Siwan received the highest rainfall in the state with 115.4 mm, followed by Aurangabad (68.4 mm), Bhojpur (47.2 mm), Nawada (44.8 mm), and East Champaran (37.6 mm). Cloudy skies prevailed in Kishanganj and Jamui.
Orange Alert for 13 Districts, Yellow Alert for 3
An orange alert, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rain along with strong winds and lightning, has been issued for 13 districts including Patna and Buxar. A yellow alert, which signals moderate rain with possible lightning, is in effect for three other districts.
Rising River Levels in North Bihar
The Lakhandei river in Sitamarhi is witnessing a sharp rise in water levels due to continuous rainfall in adjoining Nepal. On Monday, the situation worsened as three temporary diversions in the city were washed away by the swelling river, triggering concerns of possible flooding in low-lying areas.
Monsoon Axis Over Bihar
The IMD noted that the monsoon trough currently lies over Bihar, coupled with a steady flow of moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal. This weather pattern is expected to bring light to heavy rainfall in the south-west, south-central, eastern, and north-west districts over the next few days.
Gusty winds ranging from 30 to 40 kmph, along with lightning, are likely in isolated areas, the department warned.
Temperature to Drop, But Humidity to Persist
The ongoing spell of rain is expected to cause a dip in both day and night temperatures by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius. While this will bring some respite from the summer heat, the IMD said humidity levels will remain high, offering partial relief but also posing discomfort for residents.
Authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors during thunderstorms, and follow weather advisories closely.
