Patna: The Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna, hosted an orientation programme and White Coat Ceremony for its newly admitted MBBS batch of 2025 on Monday morning, welcoming students and their parents into the institution’s academic community. The event, held in the Central Auditorium, was presided over by the institute’s principal, Dr Ranjit Guha, and attended by faculty, administrative heads, and medical staff.
Dr Guha opened the programme with a welcome address, introducing the new students to the structure of the MBBS curriculum, the institute’s facilities, and its academic expectations. He emphasised the importance of discipline, compassion, and commitment to the medical profession, calling the start of their journey “a step towards a lifetime of service to humanity.”
Medical Superintendent Dr Manish Mandal elaborated on clinical postings and hospital services, while Deputy Director (Administration) Dr Vibhuti Prasanna Sinha outlined the administrative framework and student support systems. Dean (Examinations) Dr Rajesh Tiwari explained the examination and assessment process, and Dean (Academics) discussed hostel life, academic opportunities, and the institute’s anti-ragging measures.
The highlight of the event was the White Coat Ceremony, led by IGIMS Director Prof Dr Binde Kumar, symbolising the students’ formal induction into the medical profession. This was followed by the Charaka Pledge, administered by Dr Tarun Kumar, Head of the Department of Physiology, in which students vowed to uphold medical ethics and compassion in their careers.
Dr Rekha Kumari, Head of Biochemistry, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the faculty, students, and parents for their participation.

Following the formal proceedings, students toured the first-year academic departments, familiarising themselves with classrooms, laboratories, and other facilities.
Principal Dr Ranjit Guha described the event as “a defining beginning in the lives of young medical aspirants,” and thanked the staff and faculty for ensuring the smooth conduct of the ceremony.
The Foundation Course for the MBBS batch of 2025 also commenced on the same day, in accordance with the National Medical Commission’s guidelines. The first class was taken by Dr Guha, followed by a lecture by Dr Mandal, marking the academic beginning of the new cohort.
