Patna: Surgeons at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna have carried out an extraordinary and rare operation to remove what doctors described as a ‘tooth in the eye’.
The patient’s tooth was lodged in the orbital floor – the bone directly below the eye – with its roots extending into the orbit. The unusual condition made locating the exact position of the tooth highly challenging.
Using advanced Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging, maxillofacial surgeon Dr Nimmi Singh was able to identify the precise location, paving the way for the complex emergency surgery. The Maxillofacial Unit performed the operation in coordination with an expert anaesthesia team.
Following the successful procedure, the institute’s director, deputy director and medical superintendent praised the surgical team, describing the case as both a proud achievement and a testament to IGIMS’s technical expertise.
Doctors said the operation demonstrated how teamwork, precision imaging and surgical skill can resolve even the rarest and most challenging medical cases, setting a precedent for similar interventions worldwide.
