Patna: A seminar on robotic surgery was organised on June 6 under the joint auspices of the Indian Section of the International College of Surgeons (ICS) and the Department of Gastro Surgery at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna.

The event brought together surgeons, medical professionals and healthcare experts to discuss recent developments in robotic surgery, artificial intelligence-assisted procedures and trauma care. A fellowship convocation of the International College of Surgeons was also held alongside the seminar.

Focus on Robotic Surgery Training

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Manish Mandal, Governor (Asia) of the International College of Surgeons and Head of the Department of Gastro Surgery-cum-Medical Superintendent at IGIMS, said robotic surgery has recently been introduced in Bihar, including at the government-run IGIMS and some private hospitals in Patna.

He said the seminar was organised to provide surgeons in Bihar with knowledge and exposure to robotic surgical techniques and their growing applications in healthcare.

Experts Discuss AI and Surgical Innovation

Dr. Sanjay Kumar, Professor in the Department of Gastro Surgery at IGIMS and Organising Secretary of the seminar, said the first session featured Dr. Rakesh Kumar Singh, who spoke on “Tips and Tricks in Robotic Surgery”.

The second session was delivered by Dr. Shariq Nazir, President of the US Section of the International College of Surgeons, on “Smart Surgery in Trauma”. He discussed how the integration of artificial intelligence with laparoscopic and robotic techniques is improving surgical precision and outcomes.

The third lecture was presented by Dr. Anand Shankar from the Emergency Department at IGIMS on “Emergency and Trauma Surgery in Limited-Resource Settings”.

Benefits of Robotic Surgery Highlighted

During his presentation, Dr. Rakesh Kumar Singh said the integration of artificial intelligence into robotic surgery enables surgeons to perform complex and rare procedures with greater precision, minimal blood loss and reduced damage to surrounding tissues.

He added that IGIMS provides a range of robotic surgical procedures at affordable rates through trained and experienced surgical teams.

Dr. Shariq Nazir said the use of robotic surgery and AI in severe trauma cases can help surgeons control bleeding more effectively while preserving bones and muscles, allowing patients to recover and resume daily activities sooner.

Managing Trauma in Resource-Constrained Settings

Speaking on emergency care, Dr. Anand Shankar said quality surgical interventions can be delivered even in resource-limited environments. He noted that strengthening trauma and emergency surgical services can help save lives, particularly among economically disadvantaged patients affected by road accidents and other emergencies.

Early Cancer Detection Emphasised

Dr. Manish Kumar, Additional Professor of Surgical Oncology, highlighted the importance of early cancer detection and prevention. He said timely diagnosis significantly improves treatment outcomes and survival rates.

He noted that PET-CT scans play an important role in identifying several forms of cancer at an early stage, while properly conducted biopsies help confirm diagnoses and guide treatment planning.

Fellowship Degrees Awarded

Dr. Saket Kumar, Additional Professor in the Department of Gastro Surgery at IGIMS, said a Fellowship Convocation of the International College of Surgeons was organised during the event, where more than ten medical professionals were conferred ICS Fellowship degrees.

The fellowship certificates were presented by Dr. A.A. Hai, senior surgeon and former National President of the Association of Surgeons of India.

Recipients included Dr. Parmanand Prasad, Dr. Shanto Shila Guha, Dr. Nayar Remya Raghunandanan, Dr. Naveen Kumar, Dr. Farhan Mohsin, Dr. Saumya Singh, Dr. Komal Bharti, Dr. Rinku Kumari, Dr. Vishwapal Vishwendu, Dr. Anunay Kumar, Dr. Rajiv Ranjan, Dr. Utkarsh Anand and Dr. Gaurav Patel.

Leaders Praise Advancement of Robotic Surgery in Bihar

Inaugurating the seminar and convocation, Dr. A.A. Hai said the International College of Surgeons is focusing on improving professional standards among surgeons across the country and in Bihar.

He credited Dr. Manish Mandal for promoting robotic surgery in Bihar’s public healthcare system and training healthcare personnel across districts.

Dr. Hai also congratulated IGIMS Director Dr. Binde Kumar for facilitating the installation and operation of the Da Vinci robotic surgery system at the institute, describing it as a significant milestone for public healthcare in Bihar.

In his welcome address, Dr. Binde Kumar said robotic surgical procedures at IGIMS are available at a cost of Rs 50,000 and welcomed participants from Bihar, other states and overseas.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Amarjit Raj. Several faculty members and medical professionals, including Dr. Abhinav Deep, Dr. Abhimanyu Vats, Dr. Supriya Saxena, Dr. Ramya and Dr. Shanto, were also present.
